Plantronics RIG 500E Gaming Headset Review

PlantronicsRIG 500E is a hit for the competitive price point of $149. When you’re a serious gamer that knows what you want when it comes to headsets, you usually have established a preference when it comes to closed vs open back headsets. The RIG 500E is flexible in that it gives you both cups straight out of the box. No matter which you choose, you’re in for an exceptionally comfortable experience with a headset that’s both air-like in weight and gentle with its grip.

The RIG 500E’s set of accessories does not disappoint and covers all of the bases of the casual to competitive PC gamer. Simple toggling of Dolby Surround Sound, acoustic flexibility, intuitive mic mute controls, and 3.5mm and USB connectivity targets all of your PC gaming needs. Most importantly, the RIG 500E sounds great with a focus on the high and low frequencies that a serious gamer would care about in their sweatiest of moments. The subtle foot step or the gun shot in the distance not only comes across clearly, but their placements in the sound stage are easier to determine thanks to 7.1 Dolby Surround Sound.

While I did the bulk my tests with PVP first person shooters and Dying Light (PC), I was adventurous enough to give the RIG 500E a go with use of the 3.5mm cable and the Xbox One Stereo Adapter on the Xbox One. The RIG 500E played well, even though teammates commented that my game sounds leaked through when I had the boom mic flipped up. I take no points away from the RIG 500E for this since it is tailored and advertised as a PC gaming headset. Also, factor in the fact that muting directly on the adapter mutes all outbound sound absolutely either way.

If you have an Xbox One Stereo Adapter lying about, feel free to give the RIG 500E a go with your Xbox One. If you don’t and you were as curious as I was, Plantronics does sell their own Xbox One adapter here as well as a selection of Xbox One specific headsets.

The Plantronics RIG 500E was a win for me in price, performance, practicality and most of all, comfort. With its extremely light weight, multiple points of adjustment and gentle clasp on you head, it may be the current most comfortable gaming headset I’ve worn yet. You get all that you need in a nice little package for a more than reasonable price point. If you PC-game anywhere from semi-seriously to professional, PlantronicsRIG 500E is definitely worth your consideration. Take the time to check it out for yourself here!
